Today's quilting adventure

Okay, so here's what I've come up with to be appliqued in the center of my mother inlaw's lap quilt:

...just three primitive style hearts to set off the very orderly, romantic prints on the squares. I'm also thinking of putting one abalone shell button in the center of each heart.

Today's adventure was a quilt top for my sister inlaw and her hubby, who love all things Civil War related. Fabrics are from Moda's Vine Creek and Civil War Crossings by Barbara Brackman. The white tabs on the left are just my numbering system. There are fourteen rows, twelve squares long. Squares pre-sewing were 5".

The blue underneath is just another quilt I'm using for sizing...and right in the center I've placed the fabric squares with flags:

I bought 4 yards of tan and grey-blue homespun for the frame. Then I want to finish it off with a deep red floral.

Nana's Quilt

So, in my attempt to make quilts as Xmas gifts this year, here's the latest lap quilt. Still need to finish off the polka dot frame and add a striped final border but am feeling good as I made this in one afternoon!

Fabric is a combo of two charm packs; one from RJR and one from Moda. The polka dot frame is fabric my mom purchased from JC Penny's for 68 cents back in the 1950's!

I'm thinking if doing a simple felt appliqué in the center blue rectangle....

Yup, squares aren't lined up!! So, even if you buy precut fabric squares, measure them! One pack was 1/4" bigger than the other pack. Since I'm using my family as guinea pigs I'm not feeling too bad about my less than perfect measuring. The fabrics are gorgeous, I'm experimenting with top stitching and I'm having a blast. Also, this pattern is from Country Patchwork & Craft from Aystralia, Vol. 7, Num. 1. I buy them online from Erica's. They run about $9.95 per issue.

Just keep quilting...

So I've officially got the sewing bug. Here's what I've made in the last week! A quilt top for Tessa (queen size) and a quilt top for my father-in-law (lap throw). Everyone's getting a quilt for Xmas this year! I'm addicted to Moda precut fabric charm packs and jelly rolls. Where have I been? I just whipped these out!

This is for Tessa:

Some little appliques across the top...nine hand stitched (blanket stitch using variegated pearl cotton) and nine to go.

This was made with Moda's Santorini line; one jelly roll and two charm packs. I had the white on white print on hand. Now I just need to back it and machine quilt the top.

Here is the lap throw. It was made with one Moda Essence charm pack and four strips from a Moda Neptune jelly roll. The border is soft corduroy I had in my stash. I made this in about 4 hours!

Quilt Fair

October 23rd I attended a quilt fair at Ironstone Winery, here in Murphys, CA. There was a display of the entries for the "peacock" challenge:

I took a picture of almost every quilt so my mom could have a "virtual" tour. Here are a few of my favorites:
